Urgent Volunteer needs:

NC BIG SWEEP: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4    Due to the rural nature of Stokes County and the lack of countywide trash pickup, this event is very important to the health, cleanliness and safe water in our landscape.  We pick up litter on the shoulders of the roadside, stream banks, etc.  We will be responsible for seeing the trash is picked up and taken to the landfill.

Data Cards, pencils, gloves and bags for this environmental event are furnished. Project starts at 9:00 am.  If you or a group you know can help, please contact Sara Jo Durham 336-593-2847, ext. 3.

ART IN THE PARK: Saturday, November 1, King Central Park. Volunteers needed to help sell drinks and popcorn.  Proceeds go to the Arts Council. Contact Sharon Williams at 593-8159.

On Saturday, November 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Riverbank Farm in northern Stokes County, the literacy council (BCLP) that serves Stokes and Surry Counties will offer a free workshop in which adult participants learn how to tutor adult low-level readers. We use Wilson materials and ideas gleaned from The Augustine Project in Chapel Hill to instruct volunteer tutors who are willing to give 1.5-3 hours per week to teach reading. Participants will receive directions to the farm-retreat (20 minutes from both Pilot Mtn and Mt. Airy), materials to use, instruction about learning disabilities and materials to read before the class - and lunch! There are three spaces left as of 9/25/08.
The Buffalo Creek Literacy Project, a NC nonprofit corporation, needs tutors in all parts of Stokes and Surry Counties, but especially in Sandy Ridge and the other areas in the northernmost neck of the woods.
For more information, please contact Mary Lee at 336-591-3620 between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. any day of the week. An addition to the email regarding tutor-training with The Buffalo Creek Literacy Project: We also desperately need tutors who will volunteer with elementary school children at Mt. Olive Elementary in King. The how-tos will be taught to those who participate in the Nov. 1 training. Thank you! For more information, call Mary at 591-3620.
